If you live on a boat or travel full-time in an RV, you still need a physical mailing address. Banks need one. The DMV needs one. Insurance companies need one. The IRS needs one. You can't put "slip 47, somewhere in the Bahamas" on a tax return.
A mail forwarding service gives you a real street address, receives your mail, and lets you manage it remotely — scan it, forward it, or toss it. Some also help you establish domicile in a tax-friendly state.
We've used St. Brendan's Isle for years while cruising. Here's how the top five services compare.
Why Domicile Matters
Before picking a mail service, you need to decide where you want to be "from." Your domicile state determines:
- Vehicle registration — where you register your car, truck, RV, or boat trailer
- Driver's license — tied to your domicile state
- Insurance rates — vary dramatically by state
- State income tax — Florida, Texas, and South Dakota have none
- Voting — you vote in your domicile state
- Banking — some banks and brokerages need a residential (not PO Box) address
The three most popular domicile states for nomads:
| Florida | Texas | South Dakota | |
|---|---|---|---|
| State income tax | None | None | None |
| Vehicle registration | Moderate | Low | Lowest |
| Insurance costs | Higher | Moderate | Lower |
| Residency requirement | Must declare intent | Must declare intent | One night in the state |
| Best for | Boaters, international travel | RVers, central US | Cheapest registration |
South Dakota is the easiest to establish — you literally stay one night, walk into the DMV, and you're a resident. Florida is popular with cruisers because it's a natural departure point for the Caribbean and Bahamas. Texas splits the difference.
Pick your domicile state first, then pick a mail service in that state.
The Five Services Compared
1. St. Brendan's Isle — Our Pick
Location: Green Cove Springs, Florida
Price: $13.99-$29.99/month + $100 refundable deposit
Mail scanning: Add-on: $7.99-$15.99/month (Mail Scan Pro)
Domicile: Florida
St. Brendan's Isle has been doing this since 1988. They serve over 7,000 customers and have an A+ BBB rating. They were built specifically for cruisers and full-time travelers — not as a generic virtual mailbox service that happens to also serve nomads.
What we like:
- Rock solid reliability — we've used them for years without a single lost piece of mail
- Florida domicile support is straightforward
- Staff actually understands the cruising/RV lifestyle
- Mail scanning works well — they scan the exterior of every piece, and you choose what to open and scan the contents
- Forwarding is easy — tell them where you are, they ship it
What we don't love:
- The web interface is dated — it works, but it looks like 2010
- No mobile app
- Scanning is an add-on, not included in the base price
- Not the cheapest option
Best for: Cruisers and boaters who want Florida domicile and a service that's been doing this longer than most. Reliable, no surprises, no gimmicks.
Pricing:
- Basic: $13.99/month (mail receiving and storage)
- Standard: $19.99/month (adds forwarding discounts)
- Premium: $29.99/month (priority handling)
- Mail Scan Pro: $7.99-$15.99/month add-on
- $100 refundable deposit
2. Escapees RV Club
Location: Livingston, Texas (also FL and SD addresses)
Price: $95-$135/year + $49.95/year club membership + $50 deposit
Mail scanning: $10/month add-on
Domicile: Texas, Florida, or South Dakota
Escapees is the oldest and largest RV club in the US. Their mail service is a benefit of membership. If you're already an Escapees member, it's a natural choice.
What's good:
- Cheapest annual cost if you're already a member
- Three state options (TX, FL, SD) so you can pick your domicile
- Decades of experience with the RV community
- Large community and support forums
What's not:
- Requires club membership ($49.95/year) on top of mail service fees
- Mail processing is Monday-Friday only — no weekend processing
- Scanning is an extra $10/month
- Some users report DMVs and banks occasionally rejecting the address as "not residential"
- The FL and SD addresses use a dual-address system that can be confusing
Best for: RVers who are already Escapees members or want the cheapest annual option with Texas domicile.
3. Americas Mailbox
Location: Box Elder, South Dakota
Price: $169.99-$248.99/year + $25 setup fee
Mail scanning: Included on higher tiers (exterior scans)
Domicile: South Dakota
If you want South Dakota domicile — and a lot of RVers do because of the low registration costs — Americas Mailbox is the go-to. They even have an on-site campground so you can stay overnight and establish residency the next morning.
What's good:
- South Dakota domicile is the easiest to establish (one overnight stay)
- On-site campground for establishing residency
- They'll handle vehicle registration for you (for a fee)
- Titanium Plus plan includes unlimited exterior scans and cloud storage
- Competitive annual pricing
What's not:
- Vehicle registration service is their biggest draw AND their biggest complaint — multi-week delays and poor communication are common in reviews
- Some BBB complaints about the registration service specifically
- Limited to South Dakota domicile only
- Web interface is basic
Best for: RVers who want South Dakota domicile for the cheapest vehicle registration and no state income tax.
4. Traveling Mailbox
Location: Sanford, North Carolina (hub), ~25-50 satellite addresses nationwide
Price: $15-$99/month
Mail scanning: Included in all plans
Domicile: None — not a domicile service
Traveling Mailbox has the best digital experience of any service on this list. Scanning is included in every plan, the mobile app works well, and the interface is modern. If you just need a virtual mailbox and don't need domicile services, this is a strong option.
What's good:
- Scanning included in base price — no add-on fees
- Best mobile app and web interface
- Multiple address options across the US
- 7-day mail processing (not just weekdays)
- Cloud integrations and digital organization tools
What's not:
- ALL mail routes through one facility in North Carolina regardless of which address you choose — adds 2-3 days of delay
- No domicile or residency services
- Not built for the RV/cruiser community specifically
- Reviews are polarized — great on Google, rougher on Trustpilot
- Higher-tier plans get expensive ($99/month for the top plan)
Best for: Remote workers or digital nomads who want a clean digital mailbox experience and don't need domicile services.
5. Anytime Mailbox
Location: 2,500+ third-party locations worldwide
Price: Starting at $5.99/month (varies by location)
Mail scanning: Varies by location
Domicile: None — not a domicile service
Anytime Mailbox is a marketplace — they connect you with independent mailbox operators (UPS Stores, pack-and-ship shops, etc.) across the country. The cheapest option on paper, but you get what you pay for.
What's good:
- Cheapest starting price
- Massive number of locations — pick an address in almost any city
- Good if you need a local-looking address in a specific area
What's not:
- Quality varies wildly by location — some operators are great, others lose mail
- Pricing can change dramatically — multiple users report 4-6x price increases with little notice
- No accountability when things go wrong — corporate blames the operator, operator blames corporate
- Not HIPAA or SOC 2 compliant
- No domicile services
- If your location closes, you have to find a new one and update everything
Best for: People who need a cheap virtual address in a specific city for business purposes. Not recommended for your primary life-admin mailbox.

Our Recommendation
We use St. Brendan's Isle and it's GoodKit Approved. It's not the cheapest. The website looks like it was built during the Obama administration. There's no app. But in years of use, they've never lost a piece of mail, the scanning works, the forwarding works, and the staff understands what it means to be unreachable for days at a time on a boat.
If you need South Dakota domicile, go with Americas Mailbox — just don't rely on their vehicle registration service without a backup plan.
If you need the best digital experience and don't need domicile, Traveling Mailbox is the most modern option.
Skip Anytime Mailbox for anything mission-critical.
How to Switch
If you already have a mail service and want to switch:
- Set up the new service first — get your new address
- Update your address with the USPS (change of address form)
- Update critical accounts: bank, insurance, DMV, IRS
- Keep the old service running for 3-6 months to catch stragglers
- Cancel the old service only after mail stops arriving there
Don't rush it. Missing a piece of mail from your insurance company or the IRS is not something you want to deal with from a marina in the Dominican Republic.
