We have played HITSTER with adults, kids, mixed-age families, and groups of friends. We have played it in houses and cabins, and late into the night aboard boats. Every one of those groups had a great time.
The best endorsement is what happens after the first round: people usually want to play again. Several people we introduced to HITSTER enjoyed it enough to buy their own copy.
A music game almost anyone can join
HITSTER plays songs and asks players to place them in chronological order. The premise is easy to understand, and you do not need to know every artist or remember exact release years to participate. Recognizing a decade, style, or where a song fits relative to the cards already in front of you is often enough.
That makes it unusually flexible for a party game. We have played with just adults, just kids, and adults and kids together. It has worked with families and friends across a wide range of ages and musical knowledge.
It keeps people playing
Plenty of games are fun once. HITSTER has repeatedly turned into several games in a row for us. A song starts, someone recognizes it immediately, someone else confidently puts it in the wrong decade, and the conversation and competition build from there.
It works well as an organized game, but much of the fun comes from the music itself and the memories it triggers. That social energy is why it has kept working with so many different groups and in so many different settings.
Great in houses, cabins, and aboard boats
The game is easy to bring along and does not need a large dedicated playing area. We have played it at houses and cabins and late into the night on boats. As long as the group can hear the music and has enough table space for the cards, it works.
For boat or RV travel, it is exactly the kind of entertainment we like: compact, easy to introduce to guests, and capable of filling an evening without carrying a shelf full of games.
Spotify Premium makes it better
The one real caveat is the music service. HITSTER works much better with a paid Spotify account. You can use a free account, but advertisements and other playback limitations can interrupt the rhythm of the game.
That is not a dealbreaker for us, but it is worth knowing before buying. The experience is at its best when songs start cleanly and the game can keep moving without streaming interruptions.
The bottom line
HITSTER is one of the easiest games we have found to recommend to almost anyone. Adults enjoy it, kids enjoy it, mixed groups enjoy it, and people regularly ask for another round. Several of our friends and family members have bought it after playing with us, which says more than any rating could.
If you have Spotify Premium and like music at all, this is a fantastic group game. We recommend it.
